Monday 20th May - Practice Day
Cumberwell Park is a venue I really enjoy and I've had some previous success here while playing Europro so it was good to return after 3 years with those memories.
Again, the facility here is great but the short game area is next level! Easily one of the best in the country, if you haven't been, make sure you go check it out!
The weather was perfect sun and little wind. The golf course was firm and bouncy, to the point where the greens were barely making pitch marks.
I however felt like I put together one of my best practice rounds so far this season, executing a lot shots and making good assessments for how to play certain holes.
It was also nice to win the little money match we had going for the day which set me up well for the week.
Tuesday 21st May - Round 1
An afternoon 2pm tee time today and I was staying in the beautiful town of Bradford on Avon just 5 minutes from the course so I spent my morning walking down by canal and got myself some brunch. The weather was ideal, a bit of sun and light winds so I knew it was going to be a low scoring day.
I got the course in good time and went through a very good warm up.
Starting on the 10th, I played my front 9 very solid. I hit every green in regulation and I was cruising at -2, all be it with a couple of good chances missed.
I arrived at the 2nd hole (my 11th) and a longish par 4 of 460 yards. I unfortunately pushed my tee shot way right. A bit of a shock to the system considering how controlled I was feeling. I found the ball but in deep rough, I couldn't advance that far and walked off with a double bogey.
I managed to reset myself a bit and par in to finish level par for the day. I walked off feeling like I let that round slip away as I could have easily been -3 or better to be honest.
Wednesday 22nd May - Round 2
A morning tee time of 9am and we had quite a bit of rain overnight so it was going to be interesting to see how different the course would play. It would be an understatement to say how much the golf course had changed, the wind was also coming from the opposite direction to the last 2 days so I was conscious to how certain holes would play totally different.
An example of this was the 1st hole, in round 1 I hit driver and had 72 yards to the pin. Today after pushing my drive, I had 195 yards to the flag, so this was a completely different hole. We had light rain with some heavy bits for the majority of the front 9 and the wind was there but not anything more than 1 club adjustment.
I could not have got off to a worse start, making bogey at the 1st then losing my tee shot on the 2nd to walk off with a triple bogey. I responded well by making birdie at the 3rd but the day became just one big struggle. I tried hard to dig in and keep to my process which I was pleased with but after making another double on hole 8 by not executing my shots well enough, I knew it was going to be very hard to recover. Ultimately I struggled to fully commit to the driver and sort of steered the ball around after my early misses right.
I finished the round at +7 which is the worst round of the season and I walked off feeling disappointed with that.
I still managed to hit some good shots on the back 9 but this week my driver cost me 6 shots in 3 holes which is always going to make it very hard to recover from.
I now have a week off before my next event at Bowood so I will use the time wisely to rest and get some good work done ahead of another exciting stretch ahead.
Thank you for following my journey, come and join the RHG team if you would like to gain more of an insight, meet new people and improve your game.
